You're Welcome America: A Final Night with George W. Bush ~ Ry Lickliter

Words by Ry Lickliter

The other night, while drinking pints of beer with my flatmates, something strange happened. It was one of those brief moments where you feel like you, for just a brief moment, you might being staring into the future. In this tiny little sliver of time you feel like the first person to see an automobile or watched Neil Armstrong set man's first steps on the surface of the moon or the first time someone saw a non-rotary phone. It's a strange moment where you don't completely comprehend what it is you are seeing but you are awestruck none the less and you know that one of two things will happen. Either you are witnessing of the changing of an age that might not start tomorrow... It might not start in your life time... But you know, deep down in your soul of souls, that the world has evolved.

Or you are completely wrong.

It's one of the two. There is a 50/50 chance and I am leaning towards the prior when it comes to my feelings on Will Ferrell's & HBO's presentation You're Welcome America: A Final Night with George W. Bush. The shear energy that it must take to not only preform on Broadway for nearly 2 hours is nothing compared to the strain of the facial muscles that Ferrell endured squishing his face into that little fist of smirks and puzzlement that is Bush's mug. It was obvious after watching You're Welcome America that Ferrell's study of Bush's mannerisms and subtle characteristics stretched well beyond the birth of this character during his Saturday Night Live days.

Strutting across the stage in pure Texan fashion, Ferrell's George Walker Bush seemed to come almost like second nature. If it weren't for Ferrell's 6'3” stature and grasp of basic spoken English, one could have easily been mistaken at first glance. Sprinkled with both hysterical laughter and a few of the single most awkward silences I have ever witnessed. It was in these small, strange pauses that I had what I believe is my glimpse of the future. The future of comedy.

Falling back on a few old chestnuts here & there and breaking character for a few moments just to jump into the small bouts of rage that are sure to get a chuckle every time, Ferrell pushed not only the limits of political mockery but the understanding of his viewing audience. There are quite literally moments that are painfully off putting and strange. There are sections where you can physically feel the audience's confusion and feel for them in limbo as they sit not knowing if they should actually laugh or not.

There is a moment, a looooooong moment, where you can almost see the tension. The monolog being delivered is quite possibly the single most honest and realistic speeches I have ever had the privilege of witnessing. So, in fact, that it was nearly unbearable. The pauses Ferrell would take while gazing over the audience seemed to last lifetimes... It won't be until James Lipton interviews Ferrell in the distant future that we will learn that the reactions received where exactly what he intended to get. However, this interview may never happen as Ferrell will probably show up dressed as James Lipton and cause a riff in the fabric of time & space resulting in the end of all life on Earth. (This too will be due to Ferrell's advancement.)

Granted, one could easily just say, 'You are just over analyzing this bit of stand up and giving Ferrell way too much credit.' You could say that. It's a free country. But you would be wrong. Ferrell's place as a modern comedic genius is a position that very few people will debate. (Besides, if Val Kilmer says it, it must be true.) What I believe what one might mistake (and many will) to be a failure to deliver the funny will actually be some comedic avenue that is just advanced enough to be missed by the average audience.

Just like the creation of Devo or Crystal Clear Pepsi, You're Welcome America will, more likely than not, be judged in a manner that won't give it it's proper dues. The reason for this being that we, you and I, are not ready for it yet. Perhaps our kids will be. Perhaps their children. Perhaps I'm wrong.

It might just suck.

You be the judge.

Invisible Children ~ How It Ends

How it Ends mustered a whole lot of Congressional support for the LRA Disarmament and Northern Uganda Recovery Act, but we need more co-sponsors to ensure the bill is passed in the House and Senate. We need to amplify this issue to rescue Joseph Kony's child soldiers. This is our fighting chance. This is How it Ends.

Brett Dennen ~ Live Session EP

Singer/Songwriter Brett Dennen and Brazilian band, Forro in the Dark, recently collaborated to record a must-have iTunes Live Session that is available now. The EP includes reworked songs from Brett's current album, Hope For The Hopeless, including hit single,"Make You Crazy," a brand new song, "Joan of Arc,"and fan favorite (and New York City's cab staple)"Blessed." Root Hog ~ "A Complete Review" by Hidden Relic

Review by Joey Buttram of Hidden Relic Productions

It was April of 2009 when I first was introduced to Root Hog. I was working my day job when a co-worker and life long friend, who had recently learned of Root Hog, approached me. He handed me a very original-looking handbill. The handbill was all black, but had a giant hog and words written in some sort of rainbow ink. I thought to myself that this has to be one of the coolest handbills I’ve seen in my 24 years. The handbill read "Root Hog with Shadyside Allstars at LBC (Lafayette Brewing Co.)." With such a good-looking handbill, I decided I needed to check this band out. I was already a huge Shadyside Allstars fan, and if Root Hog was sharing a bill with Shadyside, then they must be great. I navigated to the Root Hog Myspace page, which led me to their website (www.roothogmusic.com). As I entered their site, I was greeted with tunes that immediately grabbed my attention. I was lost in array of rock, Americana, psychedelic, southern rock, and jam. The skill was undeniably present, and I could tell this was a band I had to see.

Later on down the road, the Hidden Relic crew was working the promotional booth at MelonKamp, when Root Hog band members approached them. The band had a handful of live recordings that they wanted us to pass out. We gladly excepted their CD. Luckily, the staff we had running the booth held one back for me. Since receiving that live recording, I’ve had many nights with Root Hog on the CD player. My girlfriend and I find that Root Hog can be the best background music for any occasion. Every time we have friends over to the house, they mention that they really enjoyed the music. I just couldn’t wait until the stars aligned for me to see Root Hog live. It seems nature has a vendetta against me seeing Root Hog live. I guess the universe knows that it may not be able to handle that sort of rage being created. Eventually the stars aligned just perfectly, and Wuhnurth Music Festival was born. Root Hog was set to play on the Hill Stage, which was literally 20 yards from the Hidden Relic promotional booth. Finally the time came, and I got my live experience. Anyone who went to Wuhnurth knows the magic that all the musicians and fans brought to Muncie, but for me Root Hog was my icing on the entire cake. There are no words to explain that event other then Rager.

After meeting the members through festival interactions, and through internet social networking sites, Root Hog sent me their debut album. I arrived home and opened the mailbox to find a yellow envelope. I was expecting the package, but what I didn’t expect is the beauty that sat inside that yellow envelope. I immediately opened the package, tossed the CD in the player, began listening, and looked at the album art. I enjoyed the art, and (like that all black handbill) I could tell this band was trying something original.

As the first song "Fools Gold " began I could feel my shoe tapping along. I found myself trying to compare this band to others, as I do with every band. I felt a touch of Allman Brothers Band mixed with lighter North Mississippi Allstars song. Although there is no comparison to this bands original sound, I kept trying. Each member’s art is prevalent in Fools Gold. The song starts off with a standard guitar rhythm, and eventually leads to an all-out jam. Lead guitarist Dru Alkire picks up at about the 3-minute mark and rips into an Allman Bros. type wail. I could feel the electricity shoot up my spine as they break it back down to a slower rhythm. This song really demonstrates how good lead guitarist Pat McClimans and Dru Alkire really are.

Song two "Feelin’ Good" is one song that has always caught my attention. To me, it mixes between a 70’s classic country song, and good ol’ Grateful Dead. I was really surprised that with all the young musicians creating dance, electronica, and hip-hop music that this one band is sticking to their roots. Guitarist Dru Alkire would have made Jerry Garcia himself smile with this tune. The lyrics make you smile, the melody is perfect, and the rhythm section is more then on point. The sound overall is a gorgeous mix, and the vocals make you think that Dru Alkire has been singing professionally forever. For someone who is into southern rock, country, and jam- this is your song.

Song three "Peaches" enters your ears with a catchy bass line laid down by Ryan Smith. Each member then adds in their voice with a "Woo-Hoo-Hoo," and into each instrument adding to Smith’s bass. Guitarist McClimans really shows listeners how he creates this sound. Lots of lead guitar, lots of start-stop bass/drum work, and an overall catchy and fun feel. Keyboardist Dan Pullins tosses the organ in and out of lead position as well. This is a fun song that is sure to get fans moving, and I don’t think any member of Root Hog likes peaches.

Song four "No Rare Thing" starts off strong with each member adding their instrument. There were two distinct sounds that fulfilled my energy within "No Rare Thing." First, drummer Taylor Dunlap seems to be an endless metronome. As well, slide guitar player Pat McClimas really adds to the mix as he whips around that eerie sound. I can tell that there is a little bit of Pink Floyd influenced into this song when around the 2:25 mark they go into a straight Floyd style break. Adding in an almost David Gilmour-sounding lead guitar. I was really impressed with the songwriting this song showcases.

Song five "So Damn Hard" is my absolute favorite Root Hog song. It starts with guitarist Dru Alkire playing, and is soon joined by the rest of the band. The song and lyrics go from a My Morning Jacket style jam into a slower, pretty, and petite portion. Shortly after, it slams you right back into the heavy jam. The lead guitar is obvious in this song as it ties all the sounds into one. Around minute 2:45, they break it down into a straight jamband riff. Noticeably, keyboardist Dan Pullins adds in his talent, and I can only imagine each member playing off each other live. The song ends with improvisation to be created live.

Song six "Wait and See" is Root Hog’s slow ballad. The jazzy drumming, lucid guitar, trancey keys, and soulful lyrics will make you want more. As the song reaches chorus the guitar breaks into a more distorted sound that is perfect for the set mood. Keys layer a sound of wonder, and out comes lead guitar with a straight blues addition. Tempo picks up later in the song as well as the lead guitar work. The song goes from a bluesy ballad into a straight jam session. This transition alone shows the originality of Root Hog’s music. This song is beautiful and obviously has lots of meaning to Root Hog band members.

Song seven " Sad but True" starts off making me feel as if I’m going to get another southern style power jam. Instead they twist your mind a little as they go into an almost bluegrass step sound. Dan Pullins keys are very noticeable at the start of this song, and you’ll find yourself lost in Pat McClimans slide guitar after the first verse. "Sad but True" is the type of song that will make your head and shoulder bounce back and forth. The lyrics remind of times I shared in the past with friend, family, and maybe someone I once loved.

Song eight "La Pistola" is my second favorite song off the album. As soon as its recognizable tune starts I feel as if I’m walking through a busy city with a destination I have yet to reach. The song is jazzy, faster paced, and fun. The jazzy guitar picking makes me move in groove. The addition of a trumpet player ties the strings together magnificently in "La Pistola." As well the drums have that jazzy feel as the sticks hit a closed hi-hat, and gracefully tap the ride cymbal. Listen closely and you’ll even get a percussion solo from Taylor Dunlap. Pullins keys are open and full of tone. This song makes me smile, and that is why music is important.

Song nine "Lay Your Money Down" is a perfect addition to this album. With big lead guitar, organ, and again perfectly played percussion section. The lyrics bust in about 30 seconds after the song starts. The mix of vocals, and lyrics sung remind me of a Black Crowes song. The words are much different, and tone is on another level. However Root Hog shows us their approach to this type of song. Big distorted guitar makes this a rock & roll fans dream. The song slows down, and cleans up around the 3:00 minute mark just to show their jamband roots. Soon enough they breakdown into a drum solo, followed by a wailing guitar, and eventually mastered keys bring them right back into a rock song. "Lay Your Money Down" is fine proof that Root Hog is not just your typical noodly jamband.

Song ten "Jesus H. Blues" starts off with Dunlap riding his cymbal. Mix in a organ style key riff, and a picking bluesy guitar. The second guitar comes in with the vocals, matching perfectly. The organ sounding keys and vocals are what pop out in "Jesus H. Blues." This song is fast paced, and could make any concert attendee dance. Root Hog consistently blows me away with how well they piece together their songs. The members of this band are not just skillful on their instruments, but these guys are pure songwriters.

It’s been a long time since a local band’s album has really impressed me. Not because of lack of talent, but because usually they don’t take their time in the studio. As a recording engineer I know first hand how bands For a starving artist, time is money, and quicker a band leaves the studio the cheaper the bill is at the end of the day. I can tell from listening to Root Hog’s debut album, that they didn’t cut any corners. This is one local band that has real potential, and I can only see them growing in the future. With musicians this skillful, their understanding of the scene, talented songwriting, and full on dedication you’ll see this band for a long time to come. Most importantly is that the members of Root Hog are nothing less then stand up guys. Every interaction I’ve had with these guys proves to be pleasant over and over. They truly have no ego, and are kind souls. Their music is on a level that can’t be reached by most bands, and this album is a display of that. Root Hog’s influences are obvious throughout their album. I can find Allman Brothers, My Morning Jacket, Pink Floyd, and Widespread Panic. However they have a very unique way of making their sound original. All in all there is no sound quite like Root Hog.
