Album ~ "Give Till It's Gone" by Ben Harper

Editorial Review from Amazon.com
"With "Rock N' Roll Is Free," the album's first single, Harper pays tribute to an audacious art form that continually challenges the status quo, demanding that we look at the world in "a brand new way." The song was inspired by rock legend Neil Young, whom Harper opened for in London last summer. Young's mesmerizing performance of "Rockin' in the Free World" planted the seeds of a new song in Harper's mind, compelling him to go straight back to his room after the show and write "Rock N' Roll Is Free." The incident is emblematic of the kind of urgency with which the new album was forged.

Harper recorded most of Give Till It's Gone - his first solo record since 2006's Both Sides of the Gun - at the Los Angeles studio of Jackson Browne, who harmonizes with him on the wistful "Pray That Our Love Sees The Dawn." The album also features two tracks co-written with Ringo Starr - the exuberant, psychedelic-tinged "Spilling Faith" and "Get There From Here," an improvisational instrumental. Starr, who also plays drums on the songs, tapped Harper for his 2010 album, Y Not.
"I've never made a record that was such a timeline," says Harper. "It's a real extension of the last year and half in my life, and all these sounds are inspired by my experiences. It's as honest a musical statement as I could make."
With Give Till It's Gone, Harper examines the disparity between the man he is today and the man he endeavors to become. Reaching deep within, he discovers there are no easy answers, but implores us to go the distance with him on this journey in the moving album opener, "Don't Give Up On Me Now." While its songs are highly personal, Give Till It's Gone illuminates the universal struggle to find meaning and fully engage with life and one another. We may pass through a dark night of the soul, but giving up is not a viable option, as Harper reminds us with certainty in the transcendent "I Will Not Be Broken."

Harper made his debut in 1994 with Welcome to the Cruel World, which was subsequently certified Gold. In 2005, he received GRAMMY awards for "Best Pop Instrumental Performance" for his single "11th Commandment" and for "Best Traditional Soul Gospel Album" for There Will Be A Light, featuring the Blind Boys of Alabama. His three most recent studio albums - Both Sides of the Gun (2006), Lifeline (2007) and White Lies for Dark Times (2009) - debuted in the Top 10 of The Billboard 200. Harper formed Fistful of Mercy with Dhani Harrison and Joseph Arthur and the trio released the album As I Call You Down in 2010."

The Blast Off ~ June 17th-19th, 2011

The First Ever
Cirque du Womp is producing our very first music and arts festival this summer, called THE BLASTOFF. We look forward to creating and playing in a boundless magical setting on over 100 acres of open land in Western Ohio with you. The fest will feature music from a variety of genres, diverse and interactive performance, and art installations that will inspire the masses. Three-dimensional string art playgrounds, teepee hideaway huts, free form nature walks, a solid selection of workshops, an artist panel discussion, community building exercises, drum circle bonfires, and of course, K@DOG and his Cirque du Womp freakshow, will fuse together for two nights of sensational wonder. It’s time for Blastoff!

Telluride Blues & Brews Festival 2011

The Blast Off Preview

Preview by Elle Fassler
Cirque Du Womp is producing a mind-blowing event that is set for June 17th through the 19th in Western Ohio at Zane Shawnee Caverns Indian Reservation and Southwind Park. The exact location of The Blastoff Festival is: 7092 State Route 540 - Bellefontaine OH, 43311

The producers of The Blastoff Festival, Cirque Du Womp are an artist collective and a production company that has been aspiring and creating events for nearly 2 years in Detroit and the surrounding college town areas. For the past year they have been planning and saving money for the production of their first music and arts festival. The Festival Director, Angela Palaian says, “We were allowed to really dream BIG, the way we always wanted to for the first time ever.”

The Blastoff will feature music from a variety of genres, unique and diverse performances and art installation. The line-up consists of Ana Sia | Archnemesis | Bass Science | Binary Star | Brainchild | Brothers Past | Covert | Dank Sinatra | Dixon’s Violin | Drchandt | DukTap | Elemental Groove Theory | Eliot Lipp | EP3 | EPROM | Freddy Todd | Heyoka | I Love Dinosaurs | Jaws That Bite | Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas | K@DOG | MC Sparkplug | Mimosa | Mochipet | NastyNasty | Noah D | Nosaj Thing + Live Visual Set | Ott | Phutureprimitive | POPSH!T | Shadow Attack | Sheepdog | Sista Otis | SuperDre | The Malah | The Muggs | The Satin Peaces | The Sunburns | The Werks | Tiny Miles & The Big Kids | Tipper | Vibesquad | Zoogma.

“Blast-Off festival is def one of the best line up’s of the summer. I like that they weren’t afraid to be original you know... I’m really grateful to be a part of such an amazing event. This Caliber of Musicianship in one area is breathtaking. So far everyone I’ve talked to about our set is super stoked,” says Patrick Scalambrino from the band EP3.

More exotic features are included in this event like 3 dimensional string art playgrounds, teepee hideaway huts, free form nature walks, a sold selection of workshops, an artist panel discussion, community building exercises, drum circle bonfires and K@DOG and his Cirque du Womp freakshow. A feature that makes this event stick-out is the festival ground sits atop a nationally recognized Bat Cave, that you can take tours in during the festival. Cirque du Womp realizes how important it is to have more than music at the festival event.

“I think people will not be able to wipe the smile off their faces...I think people will run, jump, dance, swim in the pond...get lost in our sacred forests, meet new friends deep in the woods within our galactic temple...there is nothing about this festival that we as producers and performers and festival goers ourselves are not proud
of,” says Palaian.

The Festival Director, Palaian emphasized how “there are many talented people involved with The Blastoff Festival” like her main partner Scott Sutterfield, who is the Creative Director of the festival. Palaian says her sisters play a large role in the events Cirque du Womp produces, and the street teamers, who get the word out on the festival.

As an artist collective based, Cirque du Womp values environment and freedom over sponsorship and time-constraints, and created The Blastoff Festival campout extravaganza with all of this is mind. Palaian wants to encourage people headed to The Blastoff Festival this weekend, that it is all about meeting new faces, while staying focused on the music, the workshops, the art and the vibrations. “Time will fly, see and appreciate all that you can!”

Good People, Good Times 2011 ~ The New Old Cavalry

The New Old Cavalry offers today's concert-goer an opportunity to take two steps back into the past and one large step into the future. We seek to turn every stage we play on into an event where sounds of varying backgrounds can intermingle and transform into a heart-felt, and unapologetically dynamic mash-up of hard-driving bluegrass, gospel-inspired harmonies, and psychedelic looseness. Its New, Its Old, its the Cavalry and we intend to take your foot-stompin' and whiskey swiggin' past the astral zone!
